As an action-packed 2018 came to a close with a flurry of sporting events in the years’ last weekend, 2019 is shaping up to be another busy year for our area high schools. The kids won’t return to the classroom until Monday, but athletes will jump right back into things with a busy weekend to kick off the new year.

All the area wrestling teams have enjoyed early season success, with the most important tournaments still in front of them.

North Montgomery will travel to Fort Wayne on Saturday for the Indiana High School Wrestling Coaches Association Team State Duals at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum, while Southmont will host their annual duals, including Fountain Central.

All three county schools will wrestle in the Sagamore Conference championships on Jan. 12 at North Montgomery. Fountain Central will wrestle in the Wabash River Conference meet on Jan. 12, and at the Bi-County meet Jan. 19.

Girls

The area girls basketball teams are entering the final stretch of the season. Fountain Central and North Montgomery competed in holiday tournaments, while Crawfordsville is back in action tomorrow at South Vermillion, and Southmont next week at home against Tri-West.

After winning three straight games, Fountain Central has lost seven games in a row to drop to 3-12 on the season. The Mustangs still have four Wabash River Conference dates left. They will host Covington on Jan. 8, and play at Parke Heritage on Jan. 17, and South Vermillion on Jan. 22. Fountain Central will close the regular season at Riverton Parke on Jan. 24.

Crawfordsville has battled injuries of late, dropping its last nine games, and falling to a 2-12 season record. The Athenians have Sagamore Conference games left at Western Boone on Jan. 8, at home against Southmont on Jan. 19, and at Frankfort on Jan. 25.

North Montgomery (3-14) earned a 45-35 win over Rossville on Saturday, and look to ride momentum into a home game against Greencastle on Jan. 8. The Chargers will play at Danville on Jan. 11, host Lebanon on Jan. 18, and play at Western Boone on Jan. 25.

Southmont (4-9) is riding a two-game winning streak into its next contest at home against Tri-West on Jan. 8. The Mounties have league games left at home against Frankfort on Jan. 17, and at Lebanon on Jan. 25, along with the Crawfordsville matchup on Jan. 25.

Crawfordsville, North Montgomery, and Southmont will play in the 3A Sectional at Southmont with Benton Central, Greencastle and Lebanon, beginning Tuesday, Jan. 29. Fountain Central will play in the 2A Sectional at Lafayette Central Catholic with Clinton Prairie, Seeger, Delphi, Covington, and Rossville. The IHSAA Sectional draw will take place Jan. 20.

Boys Basketball

The results have been a mixed bag in the early part of the boys basketball season, but all four local teams have shown signs of improvement of late, and are turning the corner into the middle part of the season. All three Montgomery County teams will be in action this weekend at Crawfordsville for the Sugar Creek Classic along with Western Boone.

Fountain Central (7-4) is in action again tomorrow against Indiana Deaf, and Friday night at Wabash River Conference rival Seeger. Other notable conference match-ups for the Mustangs include at South Vermillion on Jan. 19, at Parke Heritage on Feb. 8, and at home against North Vermillion on Feb. 15. Fountain Central will travel to Crawfordsville on Jan. 18, and host Southmont on Feb. 9.

Crawfordsville has had the most success of any county team so far this season, posting a 5-3 record before Christmas, including a 30-point win over North Montgomery on Dec. 14. The Athenians are 2-0 in the Sagamore Conference and poised for a run at a league title. Crawfordsville will host Southmont on Jan. 19, travel to Frankfort on Jan. 25, and Western Boone on Jan. 31. They will host Tri-West on Feb. 8, and travel to Danville on Feb. 15.

North Montgomery has won two of its last three games to bring its record to 2-8 on the season, with plenty of time to improve upon that mark. The Chargers are still looking for their first Sagamore Conference win since 2016, and will play at Danville on Jan. 11, and host Lebanon on Jan. 18. They will play at Western Boone on Jan. 25, and at Frankfort on Feb. 8, while hosting Tri-West on Feb. 15.

Southmont (1-10) has not won a game since they defeated North Montgomery on Nov. 30, but have been right there in the majority of its contests. The Mounties will play at Lebanon on Jan. 25, and host Tri-West on Jan 31. They wrap-up the season with a conference home game against Frankfort on Feb. 22.

Crawfordsville, North Montgomery, and Southmont will play in the 3A Sectional at Crawfordsville with Lebanon, Greencastle, and Benton Central, starting Tuesday, Feb. 26. Fountain Central will play in the 2A Sectional at Delphi with Carroll, Clinton Prairie, Seeger, Covington, and Rossville. The IHSAA Sectional draw will take place on Sunday, Feb. 17.

Crawfordsville has proved to be no fluke as the dominant swimming and diving teams once again this season. The Athenians hope to claim conference and sectional titles and will host the Sagamore Conference championships on Jan. 10 and Jan. 12, the girls sectional on Jan. 31 and Feb. 2, and the boys sectional on Feb. 14 and Feb. 16. Separately from the county teams, Fountain Central will swim in the Bi-County meet on Jan. 12, and the Wabash River Conference meet at South Vermillion on Jan. 17 and Jan. 19.

All three county schools will begin the gymnastics season in the coming weeks. Southmont will host the county meet on Jan. 14, while all three schools will participate in the Lafayette Jeff Sectional on Feb. 23.
